Distribution of Slumber Kits

projectdate:

Friday, February 15, 2013

Sleeping Children around the World (SCAW) donations provide bed kits to children of any race and/or religion who will benefit the most; typically being located in underdeveloped and developing countries. Since its founding by Murray and Margaret Dryden in 1970, SCAW has raised over $ 23 million to provide bed kits for children in 33 countries. Every child is photographed with the bed kit, showing the donor’s name/country on label. Each photograph is then mailed back to the original donor, providing a timeless way for the donor to remember the child who so greatly benefited from their generosity.

SCAW takes assistance of Rotary to identify deserving beneficiaries. This year RC Bombay Central from Dist 3140 had taken the responsibility for the coordination exercise. Five Distribution Centres were identified for Rotary Clubs from Dist 3140 – Thane, Bhiwandi, Wada, Karjat and Dahanu.

RCMM opted for Wada and 50 school children from nearby adivasi village were identified by RCMM member Rtn Rajan Shilotri with the help from Principal of the school. The distribution function was held on Fri 15 Feb 2013 at Wada. There were a total of 700 children in and around Wada who benefited from this charity and these beneficiaries were identified by 14 Rotary Clubs @ 50 children each. The kit consisted of: Shetranji, Dress (2 Pairs), Blanket, Chaddar, Pillow with Pillow Cover, Sweater, Towel, School Bag, Lunch Box, Water Bottle, Raincoat, Writing Pad, Kores (Compass Box), Crayons, Ball Pen, Mosquito Net, Packing Bag and Note books. The total cost of the entire kit is estimated at Rs 3000/- out of which only Rs. 50 per kit was paid Rotary Club while the rest were funded by SCAW.
