Don Ghaas

RCMM supported NGO Aarya on 2nd October, in their on-going initiative called “Don Ghaas”.
This NGO "Aarya", is formed by Sheetal Bhatkar, in memory of her son. The vision of the NGO is to alleviate some of the worries of family members of patients, undergoing long treatment in hospitals around Parel like Wadia, Tata Hospital and KEM.
This initiative called "Don Ghaas" in Marathi means a "square meal". It is very well thought out with a very simple process, and smooth execution. This started a year back with distribution of around 50 meal packets in a day. Today it has expanded and is able to provide meals for some 90-110 people daily with support from well-wishers and friends.
In a chawl opposite Gate No 5 of KEM hospital, patients companions assemble at around 11:30 am. They show the patient admit card issued by the hospital. In return Sheetal or her volunteers issue a small business sized card with days 1-30 nos printed, ward no and volunteers initial on the same. The relatives of the patients show the admit card and the daily card provided by the NGO which enables them to get the food packet. Rs.10/- is paid by the person and a food packet is handed over. Each packet contains a hot meal of freshly cooked vegetables, 3 rotis, dal khichadi and a banana. It is nicely packed in aluminium foil. The system is clear and simple.
For the NGO, the packet costs Rs 50/- each. On any particular day this cost might be borne by some well-wisher, who supports the NGO.
RCMM contributed for 90 food packets costing Rs. 4500/- . President Abhishek, Rotarians Nita, Dr. Sapale, Chandrikaben, Revati, Manisha and Julina attended this noble event.
For all of us Rotarians, we felt this is a good platform to celebrate a small happy event in the family, by contributing for a day’s meal at “Don Ghaas”. This NGO is looking to expand, by trying to provide dinner in addition to lunch. Our word of mouth will help spread this awareness and hopefully a day will come when “Don Ghaas” will support the entire day’s food needs of many more patient support families.
