Rotary Rojgar Mela

Saturday, September 23, 2017

The biggest challenge facing our country is providing sustainable and gainful employment to people, youth in particular. To lead respectable life one must have an employment. Unemployed person is looked down, good for nothing. On the other side, employers do not get right people for their requirements. Rotary sensed the important need of bringing employers and jobseekers together and came up with idea of Rojgar Mela, a unique platform to bring the employer and job seekers face to face with a view to address each other’s needs.
This year main thrust area is Rotary Seva Abhiyan (RSA). Rotary Rojgar Mela (RRM) is one of the modules of RSA. The Rojagar Mela was held zone wise, on 16th September Western Zone and 23rd September Central and Southern Zone. RCMM was the part of Southern zone.
It was a proud moment for RCMM when our dynamic young President Abhishek Shah with the full support of all the members took up the responsibility of being the lead host for the event. Southern zone had 30 clubs coming together. It was a mammoth task to contact all the clubs to get support for the event and motivate for co-hosting support.
The core team worked in full vigour, for three months (July, August and September) under the able leadership of the Convenor our own Rtn. Anand Limaye. We also received valuable support from designated members from other clubs and Rtn. Rajendra Unnikrishnan, the Avenue Chairman from the district.
Innumerable meetings at Abhishek’s  and Anand’s office stretching late into the night, for the planning, coordination and execution of this complex event was a great opportunity for the core team to make special bonding with other Rotarians and that led to friendship for life time. Organizing such mega event involved activities like - Contacting employers, creating a unique website and maintaining data for future use, printing employee forms in English, Hindi and Marathi to reach wider section of the community, banners and posters to be put up at  key points to get  wide publicity. We were also in touch with the Welfare Department of Mumbai Police who have a special cell which focuses on providing job opportunities for the children of Policemen. Specialised job providing agencies helped us in roping in Employers. Some key employers who participated were LIC, Blue Dart, Eureka Forbes, Konkan Electric, Kolaba Auto and prominent employment agencies.
Job opportunities were mainly sought for drivers, peons, household helps, cleaners, accounts clerks, maids, technicians as lower and lower middle class section of society was targeted. For such posts it is difficult to find decent continuous employment. Employers also need such people for their day to day household and business activities.
As team worked through, there were many road blocks like having adequate finance, poor response due to festival time. At times team felt of scaling down the event. But with Rotary spirit, team found innovative ways to overcome the problems and at the end it was a grad success. Our contribution was very much appreciated by one and all including our District dignitaries.
The event was organized at Premier School which is very close to Matunga Railway Station, making it convenient for people to reach the venue timely. RCMM has been associated with the school and Principal Ms. Acharya was generous to allow the use of school for the event by giving the entire school three floors at our disposal with wide front area for registration and waiting area for the candidates. A lot of attention to detail was given to make the event successful for all concerned, like proper seating,  catering, directing and handling the registration and screening. We took help of Matunga Police to take care of security and safety of all concerned. The event was on a Saturday and the school premises were given back in a spick and span condition for the school to conduct its normal activities on Monday. RCMM members and other Clubs Rotarians worked tirelessly to see that the intended intention of bringing the employer and potential employee together for a common good cause.
The event was a resounding success with 59 employers using the opportunity and 620 job seekers registering. At the end of interview rounds 220 persons shortlisted and 25 persons were given appointment letter at the venue itself.  The event was a daylong event. Ms. Acharya of Premier School was the chief guest who inaugurated the event. We also had our district dignitaries including our DG Prafull Sharma spending quality time in the morning half. In DG’s presence the first appointment letter was given to a physically challenged person by Eureka Forbes. This was a touching moment for all of us.
The entire process was very enjoyable, challenging and a great learning experience. Once again reiterated our resolve to live up to the Rotary Motto of Changing lives and making a Difference with our dedicated and coordinated efforts. RCMM now has the confidence to handle bigger District events in the future. We had a success party after the event which was well attended by Rotarians and other stakeholders who shared their experiences.
